Memory Foam vs. Hybrid Mattress: Which Is Right for You?

Choose memory foam if you want deep contouring, the best motion isolation and a closer, hugging feel. Choose a hybrid if you want more support, more bounce, easier repositioning and firmer edges. MLILY's all-foam WellFlex starts at $1,899 and MLILY hybrids start at $2,299, both with free shipping and a 10-year limited warranty.

Key takeaways

  • Memory foam has a foam support core. A hybrid has a pocketed coil core with foam comfort layers on top.
  • Memory foam wins on motion isolation and pressure relief. Hybrids win on edge support, airflow and ease of moving around.
  • Side sleepers usually want a plusher comfort level. Back and stomach sleepers usually want a firmer one.
  • Hot sleepers get the most cooling from a hybrid with cooling foams, which is the MLILY Midnight ICE.
  • Heavier sleepers and couples with a large weight difference generally get more consistent long-term support from coils.

Memory foam vs. hybrid at a glance

Memory foam and hybrid mattresses compared on the six factors most shoppers weigh.
Factor Memory foam Hybrid
Support core High-density support foam Individually pocketed coils with foam encasement
Feel Slow-responding and contouring, more "in the mattress" Responsive and buoyant, more "on the mattress"
Motion isolation Best in class Good, but coils transfer slightly more movement
Edge support Softer edges Reinforced by foam-encased coils
Ease of moving around Takes more effort to reposition Easier to turn over and get in and out of bed
Airflow Depends on foam formulation and cover Coil layer adds a built-in airflow channel
Typical buyer Light sleepers, couples, deep pressure-relief seekers Back sleepers, combination sleepers, heavier sleepers, people who want a bouncier surface

Neither type is universally better. The right answer depends on your sleep position, your body weight, whether you share the bed and how warm you sleep.

What is a memory foam mattress?

A memory foam mattress uses viscoelastic polyurethane foam over a high-density support core, with no springs. The foam softens under body heat and pressure, so it contours to your shape and returns to flat when you get up. That contouring spreads your weight across a wider surface area, which takes pressure off the hips and shoulders. Because there are no coils, movement on one side of the bed barely reaches the other, and the mattress runs silent.

The trade-off is that a surface which cradles you also makes it harder to change positions, and the edges compress more than a coil-encased perimeter. Heat retention used to be the other knock against foam, which is why cooling formulations and breathable covers matter as much as the foam itself. MLILY builds its own foams for exactly this reason: AeroFusion® Memory Foam runs micro-channels through the foam to move air rather than trap it, and BioBreeze™ is AeroFusion reengineered with at least 30% bio-based carbon.

Memory foam was originally developed in the 1960s under a NASA-funded program aimed at aircraft cushioning and crash protection. Mattress foams have been reformulated many times since.

What is a hybrid mattress?

A hybrid mattress combines memory foam or latex-like comfort layers with a support core of individually pocketed coils. Each coil is wrapped in fabric and moves independently, so the core flexes where you press into it and stays supportive everywhere else. A foam encasement around the coil unit firms up the perimeter, which is why hybrids hold up better when you sit on the edge.

Coils push back more than foam alone, so heavier sleepers and back sleepers sink less. The coil layer also moves air rather than holding it. The trade-offs: slightly more motion transfer than an all-foam bed, noticeably more weight and a higher price at a comparable quality level.

Which mattress should you buy?

If you sleep on your side

Side sleeping concentrates weight on the shoulder and hip, so you want those points to sink in while the waist stays supported. Choose the 3.0 Plusher comfort level in either construction. WellFlex in 3.0 gives you the deepest cradle. ChiroPro in 3.0 gives you similar pressure relief with more lift underneath, which helps if you also change positions during the night.

If you sleep on your back or stomach

You want less sink and a flatter surface. Choose the 1.0 Firmer comfort level, and lean hybrid. ChiroPro is the most targeted option: its 8-inch coil unit is divided into three zones, so the middle of the bed pushes back harder than the shoulder and hip sections. At $2,299 it is also the least expensive way into an MLILY hybrid.

Shop ChiroPro, from $2,299

If you share a bed with a light sleeper

All-foam wins. WellFlex and WellFlex ICE have the best motion isolation in the lineup because there is no coil layer to carry movement across the bed. WellFlex at $1,899 is also the lowest entry point of any model here.

Shop WellFlex, from $1,899

If you sleep hot

Go hybrid, and go ICE. Midnight ICE stacks the most temperature management of any model here: copper-infused Gel AeroFusion® Memory Foam, ActiveTemp™ phase change material and an enhanced cooling knit cover, over a pocketed coil layer that keeps air moving. For cooling in an all-foam bed, WellFlex ICE adds two inches of cooling foam, a cooling cover and ActiveTemp™ PCM to the standard WellFlex build.

If you are heavier or share the bed with a larger partner

Hybrid. Coils resist compression better over time than foam alone, and the foam encasement keeps the edges usable rather than collapsing when you sit down. Midnight and ChiroPro both have reinforced edges.

A note on back pain

Mattresses are not medical devices, and no mattress can diagnose, treat or cure a back condition. What a mattress can do is change how your spine is positioned for the hours you spend in bed, and support that keeps the spine closer to neutral is generally more comfortable for people who wake up stiff or sore.

The International Chiropractors Association endorsed MLILY's mattresses and pillows in 2022 following review by its board, and MLILY developed ChiroPro in collaboration with the association. An endorsement reflects a review of the product design. It is not a clinical trial result and not a claim that the mattress will relieve any individual's pain.

If you have persistent, severe or worsening back pain, numbness, or pain that wakes you at night, talk to a physician or a licensed chiropractor before assuming your mattress is the cause. Bring your sleep position and your current mattress's age into that conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hybrid mattress better than memory foam?

Neither is better overall. Hybrids give you more support, more bounce and firmer edges because of their pocketed coil core. Memory foam gives you deeper contouring and better motion isolation because there are no coils to carry movement. Match the construction to your sleep position, your body weight and whether you share the bed.

Do hybrid mattresses sleep cooler than memory foam?

Usually, yes. The pocketed coil layer creates open space for air to move, while an all-foam bed relies entirely on foam formulation and cover breathability. Cooling foams narrow that gap: MLILY's WellFlex ICE uses gel-infused foams, ActiveTemp™ phase change material and a cooling cover to compete with hybrid airflow.

Which is better for side sleepers, memory foam or hybrid?

Both work if you pick a plusher comfort level. Memory foam contours more closely at the shoulder and hip. A hybrid gives similar relief at the surface with more support underneath, which matters if you also sleep on your back part of the night.

Which is better for back pain, memory foam or hybrid?

Back and stomach sleepers who wake up stiff usually do better on a firmer hybrid, because coils hold the hips up rather than letting them settle. ChiroPro is built for this, with a three-zone coil unit that firms up under the lumbar region. Side sleepers more often need a plusher surface so the shoulder and hip can drop in. A mattress cannot treat a back condition, so see a physician or licensed chiropractor for pain that is persistent or severe.

Which lasts longer, memory foam or a hybrid?

Both are built to last roughly the same length of time when the materials are high quality. Coils tend to hold their shape better under concentrated weight, so heavier sleepers often get more consistent support from a hybrid over the years. All MLILY mattresses on this page carry a 10-year limited warranty.

Are hybrid mattresses worth the extra money?

They are if you need what coils buy you: firmer edges, easier repositioning, more pushback for heavier or back sleepers, and more airflow through the core. If you sleep light, share a bed and want the deepest pressure relief, an all-foam mattress does that job better for less. MLILY hybrids start at $2,299, compared with $1,899 for the all-foam WellFlex.

What is a tri-zone or zoned hybrid?

A zoned coil unit uses different coil firmness in different sections of the mattress. ChiroPro divides its 8-inch coil layer into three zones, so the lumbar section provides more resistance while the shoulder and hip sections allow more give.

Do memory foam mattresses have an off-gassing smell?

New foam can have a mild odor for the first few days after unboxing, and it fades with airflow. MLILY foams are made without ozone depleters, mercury, lead or heavy metals, and every mattress on this page uses a fiberglass-free flame-retardant barrier.

Can I use either type on an adjustable base?

Yes. All five models here, all-foam and hybrid, are compatible with an MLILY adjustable base, so you can raise your head or feet without changing mattress type.

Can I try an MLILY mattress in person?

Yes. MLILY sells through more than 1,500 retail locations nationwide. Use the store locator to find a showroom near you.
