The ripple effect: how one dream bedroom reaches a whole family
Two thousand special spaces. Two hundred volunteer hours each. And a wave of good that never stops at the bedroom door.
MLILY USA is the proud bedding partner of Special Spaces, the national nonprofit creating dream bedrooms for children with cancer. Every child who receives a dream bedroom also receives an MLILY mattress.
Somebody sits down with a kid in the middle of cancer treatment and asks a question nobody else is asking that week: if you could have any bedroom in the world, what would be in it? Then a crew of volunteers goes and builds it.
Special Spaces is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 2004 in Knoxville, Tennessee, that creates dream bedrooms for children with cancer. Ten chapters across nine states have now finished more than 2,000 of them, each one funded by donations, built entirely by volunteers, and revealed in a single day.
The joy does not stay in that bedroom. It moves outward, through siblings, through parents, through the whole house. The people who do this work call it the ripple effect.
The best ten seconds in the whole process
A child comes home and opens a door.
Behind it is a princess castle. A pirate ship. Butterflies across the wall. Their team's colors. Whatever they described weeks earlier, when a volunteer sat down and asked what they would want if they could have anything.

That reveal is the payoff, and it is worth saying out loud how happy it is. There are usually a lot of adults in the hallway trying not to cry. There is almost always a kid who cannot decide what to look at first.
What is the ripple effect?
The ripple effect is the idea that one child's good day sends happiness outward to everyone around them.
A dream bedroom does not cure anything, and no volunteer would ever claim it does. What it does is give a family one place in the house where a kid gets to just be a kid. That is a real thing, and it travels.
Chapter directors tell a version of the same story: the parent who calls the next morning to say their child slept through the night. Siblings who suddenly want to hang out in there. A house that sounds a little more like it used to.
It takes a village to make one of those mornings happen. Volunteers, chapters, donors, and companies willing to put their products and their people behind a kid they will never meet.
What goes into one special space
About 200 hours. That number surprises people, because the reveal itself happens in a single day.
Those hours cover everything around it. Meeting the family. Listening to the child long enough to hear what they actually want. Sourcing donated goods. Coordinating volunteers. Shopping, prepping, painting, building, hanging, styling. Then cleaning up so completely that a family walks into a finished space rather than a project.
Bedrooms come together with fresh paint, furniture, rugs, window treatments, light fixtures, bedding, painted murals, closet organization, and smart storage for medical supplies, so everything a family needs stays close at hand without being the centerpiece.
All of it is volunteered. All of it is funded by donations and sponsors, and the organization publishes its annual report and financials openly.

The companies that widen the circle
Volunteers bring the hands. Sponsors bring what those hands need.
Shurtape Technologies and FrogTape
FrogTape brand painter's tape, from Shurtape Technologies, holds the official painter's tape designation for Special Spaces. What started in 2022 grew into a national, multi-year sponsorship supplying tape for Special Spaces projects across the country.
The tape is the smaller half of it. Shurtape employees show up and work the builds themselves, contributing well over 1,550 hands-on volunteer hours so far, and FrogTape keeps a running record of the bedrooms their teams have helped build. That is the ripple moving both ways. A company gives to a cause, and the cause gives its people a Saturday worth remembering.
MLILY USA
MLILY USA is the proud bedding partner of Special Spaces. Every child who receives a dream bedroom also receives an MLILY mattress for their new bed.
The partnership dates to 2021 and includes the co-branded JAMA Collection, a children's mattress line built with these spaces in mind, with a portion of proceeds going back to the organization. Special Spaces tells the story from their side on their MLILY partner page. In a bedroom designed around rest, the bed is the thing everything else is arranged around.
Every JAMA mattress sends a little of this forward
The JAMA Collection was made for kids and made for these special bedrooms. A portion of every purchase goes back to Special Spaces, and JAMA is the specified sleep line for dream bedrooms nationwide.
Brothers and sisters, too
Brothers and sisters have been quietly sharing this whole experience, so Special Spaces and its partners make special bedrooms for them as well. Sibling spaces refresh, including FrogTape's Sprinkles of Joy program, give them an updated space of their own.
It is a smaller project than a full dream bedroom, and it lands just as well, because it tells a kid who has been very patient for a very long time that somebody noticed.
How to be part of the ripple
- Volunteer. Chapters need painters, builders, shoppers, movers, and organizers. No design experience required, and the volunteer FAQ walks through what a build day looks like.
- Donate. Give nationally or directly to a chapter in your state.
- Sponsor a bedroom. Companies and community groups can fund and staff a full makeover.
- Nominate a child. Families, caregivers, and hospital staff can all submit a nomination.
- Buy with purpose. The MLILY JAMA Collection sends a portion of proceeds back to the mission.
