Neither type is universally better. The right answer depends on your sleep position, your body weight, whether you share the bed and how warm you sleep.
What is a memory foam mattress?
A memory foam mattress uses viscoelastic polyurethane foam over a high-density support core, with no springs. The foam softens under body heat and pressure, so it contours to your shape and returns to flat when you get up. That contouring spreads your weight across a wider surface area, which takes pressure off the hips and shoulders. Because there are no coils, movement on one side of the bed barely reaches the other, and the mattress runs silent.
The trade-off is that a surface which cradles you also makes it harder to change positions, and the edges compress more than a coil-encased perimeter. Heat retention used to be the other knock against foam, which is why cooling formulations and breathable covers matter as much as the foam itself. Memory foam was originally developed in the 1960s under a NASA-funded program aimed at aircraft cushioning and crash protection. Mattress foams have been reformulated many times since.
What is a hybrid mattress?
A hybrid mattress combines memory foam or latex-like comfort layers with a support core of individually pocketed coils. Each coil is wrapped in fabric and moves independently, so the core flexes where you press into it and stays supportive everywhere else. A foam encasement around the coil unit firms up the perimeter, which is why hybrids hold up better when you sit on the edge.
Coils push back more than foam alone, so heavier sleepers and back sleepers sink less. The coil layer also moves air rather than holding it. The trade-offs: slightly more motion transfer than an all-foam bed, noticeably more weight and a higher price at a comparable quality level.

Side sleeping concentrates weight on the shoulder and hip, so you want those points to sink in while the waist stays supported. Choose the 3.0 Plusher comfort level in either construction.
